Installing Handicapped-Accessible Door Hardware

Carpenter Bob Ryley demonstrates the installation process for specially-designed lock sets. Bob and Bob Ryley also install an energy-efficient side-by-side washer and dryer. Installing High-Performance French Doors
Contractor Tim Berky and his crew install new Pella French doors. These solid-wood framed, double-paned, argon-filled, low-e glass doors let in light, retain warmth, prevent heat gain, and have a triple-latch system for added security. Cordell Burton (from Pella Windows) joins Bob Vila to show off the in-swinging French doors to be installed. It’s constructed of solid wood and double-pane, low-e glass.
Installing Impact-Resistant Windows

Window installation is underway. Bob talks with Stephen Hugh of Clearwater Window and Door Installation about membrane flashing applied to seal the joint between the steel frame and the steel skin that faces the exterior. Dave Olmstead of PGT Industries tells Bob about the wind- and impact-resistance of the PGT WinGuard window being installed.
Installing Insulated Windows in the Baby’s Nursery
Bob is now joined in the nursery by Cordell Burton of Pella Windows, who shows him the blinds that are being installed. The interchangeable blinds snap in easily between the two panes of glass. They have no cords, can be raised and lowered with a sliding button on the sash, and are free from dust and allergens. These windows are highly insulated for cold and sound, as they have a fully insulated pane on the exterior and another pane on the interior.

Installing Blinds and Window Shades

The new windows have been trimmed with blinds from Bali Blinds. In the kitchen, where a new patio door has been installed, the windows have a unique treatment. Dave Wahtera of Bali Blinds runs through the installation process. First the brackets are drilled into place followed by the head rail. The head rail allows the blind to traverse the rail smoothly.
Installing Custom Garage Doors

Remodeling pro Bob Vila and general contractor Kevin Kalman briefly tour the project site, taking notice of the progress that’s been made, before Bob goes to join Kent Forsland (from Designer Doors), who’s ready to discuss the new custom-made, cedar-faced garage doors. Installing French Doors
Bob talks with Ray Adams (from Pella Windows) about the new French doors to be installed in the library. The door is from the Architect’s Series. It’s a simulated divided light door. The glass is Pella’s Insulshield glass, an argon filled glass with low-e coating. It’s one large piece of glass with extruded aluminum on the outside, for the muntin bars, and all wood on the inside. This makes it more energy-efficient than a true divided light door.
Installing Glass Blocks

After some exterior demolition, remodeling pro Bob Vila and Gabriel Nagy-Boszoky add a glass block window between the new lanai and the master bath. With the master bathroom window facing a neighboring house, privacy has been a long-term issue. Bob helps replace the traditional sliding glass window with glass blocks.

Hanging a Wood Door in the Basement

Hanging an Engineered Wood Six-Panel Door

Carpenter Bob Ryley and Jim Daniels (of Woodport Interior Doors) join Bob Vila on location to hang a new door in the master bathroom. The pre-hung, six-panel door being installed is made from medium density fiberboard, an engineered lumber product made from wood chips. The chips are compressed to create a sturdy, stable product that is easy to paint.
How to Install Windows

Greenhouse Glass Installation
Contractor Bob Ryley installs sloped glazing on a solar greenhouse with the help of Mark Santos. They use a commercially available mounting system to attach the glazing, which consists of an extruded aluminum railing with a neoprene gasket. The gasket forms a weathertight seal. The railing also has a small trough to catch condensation. The glazing itself is a one-inch sealed glazing unit. The outer sheet is tempered glass but the inner sheet is laminated glass.
Hanging Double Doors
Remodeling pro Bob Vila joins Executive Chef Mark Herndon to have a look at what’s been done in the new basement kitchen to prepare for the state-of-the art foodservice equipment and appliances to come. Bob Ryley is working upstairs, hanging new double doors at the entrance to the private family living quarters. He and Mike Smith hang double doors at the entrance to the private family living quarters of the Virginia governor’s mansion.
Hanging Drywall Inside the Skylight

After the Velux skylights are put in, the new metal roofing from ATAS is installed around them. The standing-seam steel shingle roofing system is coated for durability and resistance to weather. Inside the barn, drywall is applied. Remodeling expert Bob Vila interviews drywall contractor Mark Richardson, as he hangs drywall inside a skylight and attaches the corner bead.
Hanging Old Doors, Installing New Door Trim, and Outfitting the Windows

Dave Olmstead shows remodeling pro Bob Vila a standard aluminum window with a thin, non-structural bead on the edge. He compares it to the heavy gauge frame of the two-pane, laminated impact-resistant window. They follow the assembly process from the cutting of the aluminum window parts, which is timed precisely to match the timing of the glass delivery, to the assembly table where the frame is prepared for the laminated glass.
Fixing Old Double-Hung Windows

On the back porch, the contractors are disguising the steel supports for the roof by sleeving them into wooden columns. Covering Doors with Plastic Laminate

The finishing touches are added to the loft conversion project’s restaurant-style kitchen, and remodeling pro Bob Vila looks into how the graduated paint finish on the curved wall was applied. Carpentry continues also, with plantation shutters being installed to separate the bedroom and living areas. He meets with architect Greg Rochlin to review the techniques used for covering a series of doors with plastic laminate.
Custom Door Installation

Remodeling pro Bob Vila meets with Curt Weiss (from J.W. Door), who has custom-made a door unit for the bungalow remodel, with glass lights designed in an Arts and Crafts style and wooden stops that resemble old putty stops. Cortney Lofton performs the installation. This unique set of French doors is installed in the master bedroom.
Door Lock Installation

Bob Ryley is installing the new lockset from Baldwin Brass on the front door. Ryley’s advice for getting started: find a clean open space to spread out your materials, and most importantly, read the directions. Ryley’s already hung the striker plate, and the next step is to attach the dead bolt and the thumb latch. The brass hardware comes with corresponding hinges to create a matched set.

Building and Hanging the Country-Style Door

It is time to begin the interior decorating process, so remodeling pro Bob Vila receives some tips on selecting and hanging wallpaper. Contractor Bob Ryley builds a new country-style door in the shop and hangs it in the new entry. Refinishing in the basement continues with the installation of paneling. A country-style door, built by carpenter Bob Ryley in the workshop, is hung in the new entry of the Plymouth project house.
Combining Two Double-Hung Windows

Two recycled windows are used to create one large window. Once carpenter Bob Ryley demolishes the old frame, supports are installed to hold up the new combined window. Constructing a Custom-Recessed Bulkhead Door

Back at the site, contractor Larry Landers and the crew cleverly conceal a bulkhead door beneath the farmer’s porch. Larry builds a trapdoor to enable access to the old bulkhead from outside. Sheet lead flashing and an ice-and-water barrier are used to waterproof the trapdoor. To give the door stability, four pressure-treated cleats are used.
Continuing Work on the Bulkhead Entrance

Remodeling expert Bob Vila and carpentry contractor Bob Ryley install a bulkhead from a kit and put a trim (a soffet, facia and drip edge) on the front façade. Landscaping for Energy Efficiency
Landscape designer Ruth Foster drops by the site to help revamp the tired, winter-beaten yard around the greenhouse, and to plant a new tree for shade. Inside, the mason is adding stucco to the walls and laying a bluestone floor, which will help with heat storage. Ruth explains her selection of plant material and flowering shrubs for the backyard and directs the planting of a Sephora Japonica shade tree.
Removing a Hazardous Tree
Ruth Foster joins Bob to recommend the removal of a “hazard tree” that is large, rotting and threatening to the house. Cranes hoist tree cutters who cut the limbs and ready them for lifting over the ridge of the house to the chipper in the street. In back, a new triple-panel sliding door is installed after they remove the old windows and door, discover wood rot and insect damage, and rebuild the sill with pressure-treated lumber.
Replacing the Gutters, Trimming a Tree, and Creating a Low-Maintenance Front Yard
A Norway spruce is limbed to bring air and sunlight to the tree, making it sturdier in wind and snow. In the front yard, the focus is on low-maintenance landscaping with pachysandra that will spread to cover the ground, holly, rhododendrons, spring bulbs, and a red Japanese maple. Installing a Fence on a Sloped Site
Back in Melrose, MA, remodeling pro Bob Vila is outside for the installation of a white cedar fence that is racked to accommodate the sloping lot. The posts are sunk 36 inches into the ground, or one third the overall height of the fence, backfilled with dirt, then set with concrete for stability. The concrete is set outside the dirt packing so that water does not trap against the posts.
